East Valley NAACP President: Demonstrations Are Having An Effect

The president of the East Valley NAACP says the widespread demonstrations in the wake of the death of George Floyd are starting to have an impact on law enforcement reform.

Speaking on "Arizona Horizon," Roy Tatem Jr. says he’s noticing some positive steps taken by police and willingness to reform at many levels of government.

“Some of the officers are taking knees with those in the community that are peacefully protesting, and there’s a connection. I think we can begin to move forward," he said. "Speaking to a number of elected officials at all levels, city level, state level and at the congressional level, all are looking to enact some level of policy change."

The Phoenix City Council will meet Monday to discuss the budget, which will include debate over funding for the Office of Accountability and Transparency, a new civilian review board approved in February that will investigate complaints against police.
