Firefighters have gained ground on the 800-acre Mangum Fire in Kaibab National Forest.
Kaibab Forest spokeswoman Jackie Banks said dry conditions and heavy winds caused the fire to gain ground.
“This fire quickly picked up, moved very quickly, and was really being pushed all around by exceptionally high winds,” Banks said.
The fire is about nine miles from Jacob Lake and can be seen from the Grand Canyon.
Banks said conditions have improved and firefighters have established burnout lines.
They hope to get a handle on it before winds pick up later this week. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
