Revenue from parking meters is another economic casualty of the coronavirus.
In a typical month, parking meters downtown generate $300,000, but in April it was $49,000. Since mid-March most of the city’s 2,230 parking meters have sat empty, and Phoenix’s Street Department expects lower demand through the end of the fiscal year, which is June 30.
According to a city report, the program’s operating budget was $1,091,296 and generated $3.8 million in revenue in fiscal year 2018-19. The current operating budget for fiscal year 2019-20 is $1,238,952 and Phoenix has seen $2.7 million in revenue through April.
The Streets Department estimates total revenue for fiscal year 2019-20 will be about $2.8 million, which would be 26% less than the previous year.
