MEXICO CITY — The coronavirus pandemic has severely affected the economies of many tourist destinations throughout the world. Now, after three months of isolation, one of the most popular locations in Mexico for Americans is slightly opening its doors.
As soon as the first group of tourists arrived at their hotel in Cancún this week, they were greeted by the hotel staff, government officials and mariachis.
Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco shared on social media the video to show that visitors are welcome in Mexico’s top tourist city in the Caribbean.

Forty-one hotels in the area have been allowed to reopen, but only up to 30% of their full capacity.
The pandemic in Mexico is still on the rise. But Carlos Joaquín González, governor of Quintana Roo — the state where Cancún is — allowed tourism to be considered an essential activity.
Tourism is among Mexico’s main sources of income, along with remittances from expatriates, oil and the auto industry.
