MEXICO CITY — Last week, many rallied against police brutality and abuse in Mexico, after a civilian in the state of Jalisco was allegedly killed in custody. The case is still open, but an investigation by the state’s Human Rights Commission says the police tortured and executed the man.
According to Jalisco’s Human Rights Commission, 30-year-old construction worker Giovanni López was arrested with excessive use of force outside his home.
The commission’s report indicates that López was excessively and deliberately beaten before he was taken to the police station, where surveillance cameras didn’t work.
The next day, López’s relatives found him dead in a hospital.
Protests in Mexico after López’s deathhave become part of the accusations of abuse by the police.
A group of policemen in Mexico City also are accused of allegedly kicking a 16-year-old protester on the floor. And in Guadalajara, the presumably illegal arrest of several protesters is under investigation.
