COVID-19, Wildfire Smoke Overlap Presents Health Risks

The Forest Service has released an analysis of how COVID-19 might impact communities during wildfire season.

Exposure to wildfire smoke can irritate lungs and weaken the immune system. It also can increase susceptibility to respiratory infections such as COVID-19.

The analysis said the overlap of COVID-19 and wildfire could affect people at risk from wildfire smoke. That includes children under 18 and adults older than 65. Wildfire smoke can also affect pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions.

The Forest Service urges people with chronic health problems to stock up on medicines and be prepared for evacuations during fire season. That includes making a plan for your pets.
