Arizona's Biggest Cities Got More CARES Act Money Per Resident Than Small Towns

In March, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funding was aimed at supporting struggling state and local governments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Larger cities like Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson got paid directly from the federal government. However, for smaller cities and towns it was up to each state’s governor to distribute the funds.

The Arizona Republic found that Gov. Doug Ducey distributed less money to smaller communities in the state. On average, the governor gave $115 per resident compared to the $174 per resident that Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson received.

Craig Harris is one of the reporters who investigated the story. The Show spoke with him for insight into this allotment.
