More than 10,000 Arizona teachers were surveyed in a statewide poll asking for their thoughts and concerns about the upcoming school year.
About 79% said they’re willing to return to the classroom, but Expect More Arizona president Christine Thompson says nearly two-thirds are concerned for the health and safety of students and for the staff.
“Health and safety of staff and teachers and the community was one of the top. But I think that these educators get their all, they’re dedicated to a profession of service to their students," Thompson said.
Arizona public school buildings closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year on March 30 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Arizona Department of Education released a plan June 1 for reopening schools in the fall.
Some schools, Thompson says, are considering requiring the use of face masks or shields upon return. But she says there may be drawbacks because a lot of social and emotional learning for young children happens when they are able to see the facial expressions of their teachers.
