Sonoran officials are confirming a dozen deaths after extreme violence rocked a northern Sonoran city over the weekend.
Late on Friday evening, a massive convoy of between 40 and 50 vehicles entered Caborca, sowing panic in the north central city of roughly 90,000 people, according to Mayor Librado Macias.
“They burned three homes, a gas station, they burned several vehicles,” he told KJZZ.
State authorities said that two people were killed in Caborca during what they described as a confrontation between criminal groups, and 10 bodies were found piled along a nearby stretch of highway. Macias was in Hermosillo Monday meeting with security officials. He said the police presence will be reinforced in the area.
Through the end of May, there were 29 murder cases in Caborca, nearly equaling the total for all of 2019, according to recently released federal data analyzed by KJZZ.
