Inmate Fire Crews Work Bush, Bighorn Fires

The Arizona Department of Corrections has deployed six wildland fire crews to help fight the Bighorn Fire outside of Tucson and the Bush Fire northeast of Phoenix.

Each crew is made up of low-level offenders. The crews have been trained in a variety of roles and are undergoing strict protocols to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. They will be tested, monitored and quarantined for 14 days before returning to their prisons.

The crews also help with brush abatement outside of fire season. The DOC says that 113 inmates are now working the fires.
