The Challenges Arizona Firefighters Are Facing This Fire Season

The news cycle these days might be dominated by the spike in coronavirus cases in the state and, this week, President Donald  Trump’s visit to Arizona. But it’s also wildfire season in Arizona, and crews across the state are battling unprecedented conditions on fires from Tucson to Phoenix.

Firefighters are seeing fast-moving, dry conditions this summer. For example, around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, a new fire erupted off of the Interstate 17 and Carefree Highway. By 5 p.m., the Aquila Fire had burned 1,000 acres.

The Show caught up with Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management Battalion Chief Joe Barreras about the unique challenges they’re facing this fire season.
