Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli announced Friday that the city’s Frontier Days Parade — one of the longest-running Fourth of July parades in the state — is canceled this year due to COVID-19.
Mengarelli says the parade through downtown Prescott usually draws a big crowd, and it would be difficult to keep a 6-foot distance between spectators.
"Just with all these things happening with the spike (in coronavirus infections), we really are very concerned about some of these community events coming up," Mengarelli explained in an interview with Prescott radio station Magic 99.1. "We want to make sure that public health is our number one priority, and we don’t want to have a whole bunch of people, you know, in the downtown area with this virus being so widespread in the community right now."
The city’s rodeo and Fourth of July fireworks shows will continue as scheduled, since the organizers believe there is enough room for spectators to maintain physical distancing.
