MEXICO CITY — Last Friday, Mexico City’s secretary of security survived from an attempt of murder by heavily armed hit men. The attack might have been a direct consequence of recent operations against drug cartels shared between Mexico and the U.S.
Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said there’s an ongoing investigation. She said her government arrested 19 people and has conducted several searches.
Secretary Omar García Harfuch tweeted from his hospital bed that the attack came from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). During the attack, which happened at the upscale neighborhood of Las Lomas, near the house of the U.S. ambassador, two police officers and a woman walking by died.
The CJNG is a criminal organization that has been recently struck by U.S.-Mexico operations, including the deportation of two of its leaders and blocking almost 2,000 bank accounts in the U.S.
Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been criticized after the attack, as crime rates go up, and as he admitted ordering the release of the son of drugpin “el Chapo” last year after a failed operation.
