MEXICO CITY — The coronavirus pandemic is still growing in Mexico, according to federal data from that nation. But its capital, Mexico City, is allowing the limited return of some businesses and activities, as the city’s government information indicates a drop in hospitalizations this week.
Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that certain small businesses, hotels, restaurants, hair salons and street markets will be allowed to start to open gradually with limited occupancy and hours. Mexico City's heart, the downtown area near Zócalo square, will also reopen with restricted traffic and hours.
Face masks are still mandatory and quarantine recommended.
Shainbaum said the measures are based on scientific proof. She says there’s been an 18% drop of bed occupancy in hospitals and a 36% drop of hospitalizations in public clinics for over a month.
The mayor, a distinguished scientist herself, has opposed the federal government’s line by promoting more COVID-19 testing, enforcing face masks and installing educational health brigades.
