Tucson Electric Power said it plans to stop using energy generated by coal by 2032 and three years later will be producing more than 70% of its power from renewable sources. Those figures come from the utility’s new Integrated Resource Plan, which gets an update every three years.
TEP also says that by 2035, the plan will cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 80%, compared with their 2005 levels.
The plan is not subject to approval by regulators, although they will either acknowledge it or not. An acknowledgement would indicate that the Corporation Commission believes the plan is in the public interest — that could come by the end of 2020 or early 2021.
Before that, though, the public will also have a chance to weigh in on it.
The Show spoke with Jeff Yockey, director of Resource Planning for Tucson Electric Power, about what he considers to be some of the plan's highlights.
