Two weeks ago, the Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team was placed into quarantine after four players tested positive for COVID-19. Now their quarantine is over, and players are getting ready to resume practice.
Sixteen players were quarantined in a university dorm two weeks ago after a total of 10 players ended up testing positive for the disease. All of the students were either asymptomatic or showed only mild symptoms.
As of Friday, GCU said the players had finished their 14-day quarantine and were preparing to resume individual workouts.
"The University developed very specific protocols for the return of our student-athletes after reviewing guidelines and best practices put forth by the NCAA, CDC, and Arizona and Maricopa County health experts,” said Jamie Boggs, interim Vice President of Athletics at GCU. “That enabled us to identify the positive cases right away and care for our student-athletes while in quarantine. As summer workouts begin, we will continue to take all necessary precautions to ensure the continued safety of our student-athletes and the GCU campus community.”
Each player will be tested again, and undergo a full cardiac physical to make sure they’re healthy enough to play basketball.
Regular practices will begin on July 20, the earliest the NCAA allows.
