Despite the ongoing pandemic, a group led by women in neighboring Sonora is continuing to search for the remains of missing loved ones.
Since March, las Madres Buscadoras de Sonora — or the Sonoran Searching Mothers — have found roughly 30 bodies. That’s according to group leader Ceci Patricia Flores.
“If we — the families of the disappeared — don’t look for them, nobody will,” she said.
Flores said the group is taking precautions, like wearing facemasks, to prevent the spread of coronavirus during searches.
Last week, the group found a number of clandestine graves with human remains east of the state capital Hermosillo. Flores said the number is higher, but the Sonoran state Attorney’s Office confirmed the discovery of nine graves and the complete skeleton of one person, along with other skeletal remains, according to a release.
State authorities are working to identify those found.
