Salt River Project Customers In Phoenix Area Set Record High Energy Usage

Salt River Project customers in the Phoenix area shattered a record for energy use — twice — over the weekend.

It takes one megawatt to power about 225 average homes. On Saturday, SRP measured 7,395 megawatts of power used in one hour, shattering a record set in July 2018. But then on Sunday, the record was broken again between 5 and 6 p.m. using 7,615 megawatts.

An SRP spokesperson says the multiple days of high temperatures and an expanded customer base since 2018 were factors in the heavy electricity usage. Sunday’s high in Phoenix was 116 degrees.

According to SRP: "Customers can report an outage or check for outage updates by visiting  srpnet.com/outagemap, by using the  SRP Mobile App on mobile devices or computers, or by calling 602-236-8888."

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been modified to correct the megawatts record.
