Arizona School Districts Trying To Avoid The 'Scramble' Of Spring, Planning For Distance Learning This Fall

A number of school districts across the state have said they’ll be starting their 2020-2021 school years with remote learning, rather than having students physically in schools.

The Creighton Elementary School District in Phoenix plans to start its school year on Aug. 3, two weeks ahead of the “aspirational” date Gov. Doug Ducey set for in-person classes to resume. But the district’s classes will be remote, with a combination of live video classes and independent learning.

Superintendent Donna Lewis says the district sent a device to every family last spring, when schools originally closed for in-person classes. While she says that helped reduce the digital divide, it didn’t close it completely — she estimates around a quarter of families in the district do not have internet access, although she’s hopeful about closing that gap soon after classes begin.

The Show spoke with Lewis for more about how she's been planning for distance learning.
