A man driving a Tesla Model S on autopilot mode crashed into a Department of Public Safety patrol car early Tuesday, causing the patrol car to rear-end an ambulance. DPS spokesman Bart Graves says it is not yet clear what led to the incident.
“The Tesla was on autopilot at the time of the collision,” said Graves, “and we are trying to determine whether this gentleman was impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.”
A Facebook post by the Arizona DPS said the trooper was not in the patrol car at the time of the crash, and that those occupying the ambulance were also unharmed.
No one was seriously injured, but the Tesla driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
