Mexican President Says Military Will Take Charge of Land, Sea Ports

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the military is going to play a more important role at land and sea ports in the country.

AMLO, as he is widely known, made the announcement Friday in the major port city of Manzanillo. He said it and other ports have served as key entry points for drugs and chemical compounds for their manufacture.

“That’s why we made the decision,” he said.

AMLO also said that ports have been plagued by corruption and poor administration.

Federal port administrator Horacio Duarte, who was on hand for the announcement, said military personnel have long had a presence at customs offices. What will be new is that administration will be in the hands of Army or Marine officers, according to Duarte.
