Five Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale locations will offer a service for students who need a place to do schoolwork while school buildings remain closed. The Virginia G. Piper, Hartley & Ruth Barker, the Mary Ellen & Robert McKee, the Thunderbirds and the Vestar branches will begin offering the program for current and new members starting Aug. 5 until schools reopen.
Christian Sanft, one of the branch directors, said the program is meant to support parents who aren't able to stay at home to support their students with distance learning.
“We’ll have staff and volunteers on hand to lend the kind of technical and emotional support that kids need to get some of that work done so that when mom and dad are picking up after a long day of work, they're not starting homework at 8 o'clock," he said.
Students will be provided with Wi-Fi and technical support, but will need to bring their own tech devices and headphones. Program costs vary by students’ age and daily and weekly rates.
Space will be limited to assure physical distancing. Masks and temperature checks will be required. The clubs are also taking other COVID-19 precautions such as hand sanitizing, curbside pickup and drop off, and hourly disinfecting of high-touch areas.
