Police Commander Killed In Northern Sonora Shootout

A Sonoran police commander was killed this week in a part of the state that has seen high-profile incidents in recent months.

On Thursday afternoon, state police Cmdr. Daniel Hernández was part of an aerial patrol near Imuris in northern Sonora. After spotting what is described as a suspicious group in a release, the helicopter landed and an armed group started firing at the officers, killing Hernández. He had been with the state police for 16 years.

In May, a shootout in nearby Magdalena claimed the life of a former mayor and shut down the state’s main interstate.

In late June, a massive convoy of suspected cartel members sowed chaos in Caborca, burning several buildings and leaving a dozen dead.
