Officials in neighboring Sonora, Mexico are launching a new stimulus program to promote arts and culture during the pandemic. The funds will be distributed through a series of arts contests.
Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich announced Friday that the state has set aside approximately $314,000 in new funding to support artists during the pandemic.
"Without a doubt, culture and art is something that helps us greatly to become a better society," she said adding that the arts are helping many people get through difficult times during the pandemic.
But artists are also struggling right now, she said. The new stimulus will pulling from state and federal resources to provide more than 800 grants to individuals and groups working in visual arts, dance, theater, music and other artistic disciplines.
The funds will be disbursed through a series of arts contests administered by the state’s Cultural Institute starting in August.
