Sonoran Officials Say Youth Responsible For Majority Of Coronavirus Spread

As in Arizona, leaders in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, continue to struggle to tamp down on the spread of the coronavirus. And the state’s health secretary says young people are most responsible for proliferating the virus.

On Saturday, Sonoran officials announced another 363 coronavirus cases and 39 deaths. State Health Secretary Enrique Clausen says youth bear responsibility for much of the continued spread of the virus.

"We're going to say it clearly and we're going to say it loud: the people who are most spreading and contaminating COVID-19 in the community are young people," Clausen said during a press conference Saturday evening.

He said youth who have asymptomatic cases of coronavirus are inadvertently spreading it to others by not taking necessary precautions, and he told anecdotes about people who died after contracting the virus from family members.

Clausen urged youth to protect their loved ones and others in the community by staying home and being more vigilant about wearing face coverings, washing their hands and maintaining a safe distance when they must go out.

As of Saturday, there were a total of 23,132 confirmed coronavirus cases and 2,163 confirmed deaths in the state.
