Report: Inadequate Unemployment Benefits Could Cost Arizona's Economy $2 Billion

As the pandemic has continued and Congress, via the CARES Act, added $600 a week in unemployment benefits, the limited amount Arizona offers in unemployment payouts has been made clearer.

A new reportfrom the Grand Canyon Institute concludes the $240 that Arizona pays will help contribute to the state losing up to $2 billion in economic activity because too many residents who are working only limited hours aren’t able to get any unemployment-related payouts.

Dave Wells is research director at the Grand Canyon Institute. The Show spoke with him about how Arizona’s low unemployment earning allowance has affected the state’s broader economy.
