Students across the state are going back to school, some at their home computers while others return to their classrooms despite guidelines from state officials. According to the benchmarks released by the state Department of Health Services, no county currently meets the three criteria to reopen safely. But school leaders are free to decide otherwise, and some have.
Queen Creek Unified School District is bringing students and staff back to campus Aug. 17, for example. J.O. Combs Unified School District in San Tan Valley had planned to do so as well but canceled plans to return on Aug. 17 after a sixth of its staff said they would be absent.
That case speaks to broader concerns over public health metrics as the state continues to battle COVID-19.
