The governor extended Arizona’s eviction moratorium through October. But after this week, to avoid eviction, tenants will have to show they’ve applied to a rental assistance program through the city, county, state or a nonprofit group.
Out-of-work event planner Timmesse Thompson said Arizona’s second-lowest unemployment payouts in the country don’t cover the costs of Phoenix’s increasingly expensive housing. She’s also worried about groceries, utilities and her internet bill so her daughter can do distance learning.
“I am so frustrated because why is it a question, like, to help us? And why is it a question, what is too much help?” Thompson said.
After applying to several programs, Thompson was able to get assistance through a nonprofit that will cover her rent for two months.
There are now many rent relief programs statewide but requirements vary. And, to avoid eviction, Arizona tenants fearing they can’t pay rent will need to apply for assistance by Aug. 21 under the governor’s executive order. Tenants also must show proof of hardship to their landlord and request a payment plan.
Cynthia Zwick with the nonprofit Wildfire said communication is key.
“Get a hold of your landlord and make sure that they’re aware of what you’re doing," Zwick said.
Zwick also recommends calling Arizona’s 211 service for help finding relief programs.
