The Arizona Supreme Court has affirmed a judge’s decision on a ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana.
That means voters will get a chance to decide the issue in November.
Opponents of the measure had challenged the 100-word description supporters used when gathering signatures.
But a trial judge said the description was clear, and the Supreme Court agreed.
That paves the way for the Smart and Safe Initiative to be on the ballot in November.
"Yeah, we’re thrilled," said Stacy Pearson, a spokeswoman for Smart and Safe. "The voters in Arizona are ready to legalize marijuana in a safe and responsible way. So voters in Arizona understand that what they’re going to be looking at is a question that is this simple: Do you want marijuana taxed, tested and regulated, or just sold out of a backpack?"
A similar measure lost four years ago after opponents launched an extensive ad campaign, but a recent poll shows that 6 out of 10 Arizona voters support this year’s initiative.
