Navajo Nation President Pitches Plan To Spend $177M In CARES Act Funds

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez proposed legislation that would earmark $177 million in federal CARES Act funds.

The proposal would fund at least 17 line items ranging from solid waste disposal to providing school supplies for children in the Navajo Nation.

About $30 million would go directly to elders and those with disabilities and underlying health conditions to help purchase food and pay bills. Another $25 million would go to housing initiatives.

The largest single line item is $35 million to support Navajo Nation college students, whose financial support was already significantly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nez will present the proposal to the Navajo Nation Council. They have until December to use the funds.
