MEXICO CITY — The Mexican president has built his platform on promising to fight corruption. But now, he’s been indirectly accused of allegedly accepting illegal campaign contributions.
A video exposed by the media shows President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s brother receiving millions in cash two years ago. He gets them from a current high-ranking official appointed by the president, who formerly worked for a state government.
The official, David León, stepped down. An opposition party filed a formal complaint against Pío López, the president’s brother, demanding an in-depth investigation.
President López Obrador said he’s eager to testify, if required. Current Mexican laws protect presidents from facing certain criminal charges.
The president argues that the money given to his brother is not corruption but instead contributions to his movement.
Mexican law prohibits political parties from using money of illicit or unregistered origin, particularly from public officials.
