Bureau Of Reclamation Reduces Davis Dam Flows To Reduce Caddisfly Population

The Bureau of Reclamation has reduced releases from Davis Dam in an attempt to lessen the caddisfly population near Bullhead City.

The reduction is part of an ongoing effort to deal with the insects.

Bullhead City has been struggling with swarms of caddisflies for years. Although the bugs are harmless, there are so many of them that the city hired an entomologist to look into the problem.

The idea is to reduce the population, not eliminate it, said Micheal Cavallaro. He says lowering the water level will expose the larvae to sunlight.

“There are a number of other things that we’re kind of starting to pilot but one of those that has the most promise, and has shown to be pretty effective as far as the reduction in numbers is lowering the Colorado River,” he said.

The Bureau will reduce releases from the dam again on Sept. 10.
