A pilot is recovering after his small plane crashed near Grand Canyon National Park.
Coconino County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jon Paxton says the plane’s engine failed on approach to Tusayan airport, just south of the park’s entrance.
“He was returning to the airport, and was banking or making a left-hand turn to set up for his approach when the engine died," Paxton said. "When he was unable to get the engine restarted, he attempted to land on Highway 64. When he was trying to land, his right wing struck a light pole, causing the crash and for him to be flipped over."
The 24-year-old pilot was airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center with neck and back injuries.
