The Flagstaff Police Department is reporting a spike in overdoses and deaths in connection with fentanyl pills meant to look like the prescription opioid oxycodone.
Sergeant Charles Hernandez says these pills have inconsistent amounts of laced fentanyl or carfentanyl in them.
"They’re coming up from Mexico and appear to be legitimate M30-type oxycodone pills. And unfortunately they are being sold in the community in large quantities," Hernandez said.
On Monday there were two separate deaths involving these pills. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, fentanyl overdoses are going up. In March, a spike in fentanyl more than doubled the previous year's number and was up from high numbers recorded in January.
