A beach in the popular Sonoran tourist town Rocky Point has received a designation for environmental and quality standards. City officials say its clean beach status is yet another draw for visitors.
Manny’s Beach in Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point, is the first Sonoran beach to receive a Blue Flag certification.
The voluntary eco-label is awarded to beaches that meet environmental, safety, educational and other standards set by the nonprofit Foundation for Environmental Education. More than 4,500 beaches around the world have the Blue Flag distinction, including 63 in Mexico.
Rocky Point Mayor Ernesto Munro says it’s part of an effort to improve sustainability in the city. It’s also a tourist attraction.
"Just like we’ve been promoting Peñasco as free of COVID city, having a certified clean beach is also a good banner to sponsor the city as a safe place to visit and to enjoy," he said.
Rocky Point is now working to certify at least one more beach in the coming year, Munro said.
