In 2018, Sonora had the worst outbreak of Zika in Mexico. But while coronavirus has hit the state hard this year, it’s so far been spared by the mosquito-borne virus.
Sonora’s roughly 350 confirmed Zika cases in 2018 were around 40% of the entire country’s total that year. And as the outbreak spread, Arizona officials warned against traveling to Sonora, bad news for the state and its well-known beach destinations. But through the end of August, there hasn’t been a single confirmed case here, and only six nationwide, according to the most recent federal data.
Last year also saw far fewer cases, with just 13 confirmed in Sonora by late December 2019. Zika infections during pregnancy can lead to the serious birth defect microcephaly.
