Several hundred supporters gathered at the Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix on Monday to watch the president participate in a Latinos For Trump roundtable event.
Trump described the event as an opportunity for him to listen and learn from Latinos who he said embodied the American dream.
“You uplift the communities and promote our shared values of faith and family, community, hard work and patriotism,” he said.
Trump heard from several small business owners and community leaders from around the state who touted his efforts to bolster the economy.
Fernando Basurto from Tucson said he supports Trump because of his crackdown on immigration and efforts to build the border wall.
Basurto says his grandson was murdered in 2016 by a man from Nicaragua who was in the country illegally. He says he’s afraid of what will happen if Trump is not given another term to fortify the border.
“It might be somebody else’s family member that gets killed by an illegal alien,” he said.
The president said protests and riots were harming small businesses and warned that a Biden presidency would lead to increasing lawlessness.
The trip marks the fifth time the president has visited Arizona this year. Despite the frequent visits, recent polling shows former Vice President Joe Biden with a growing lead over Trump in Arizona.
