The moratorium on utility shut offs for delinquent accounts in the city of Mesa is coming to an end next month. But the city has increased its utility assistance program budget from $1 million to $8 million, to help city residents impacted by the pandemic.
Those with delinquent account balances using city electric, gas, water or solid waste services, or utility service from SRP or Southwest Gas, may be in luck.
The city’s utility assistance program funded by the federal CARES Act has been enhanced and will be used to pay off open balances from March to October for eligible customers.
Starting in October, people with delinquent accounts will get phone calls explaining the choices: disconnect, pay, or apply for assistance.
Residents can apply through Mesa Community Action Network. The funds will be awarded on a first come basis until the money is gone or until Dec. 30.
