This week a group of Chicano Studies professors launched a program offering free Chicano Studies virtual classes amid the pandemic.
MeXicanos 2070, whose mission it is to “reclaim and enrich the indigenous Mexican American culture and enhance their way of life” is hosting the online courses through its program Colegio Chicano del Pueblo.
Classes began Wednesday and they will run eight weeks. More than 75 students from four states are enrolled as of now.
Before the pandemic, Chicano Studies programs and departments were seeing a national increase in popularity. For example, at the University of New Mexico enrollment jumped from 96 in 2011 to 707 last fall.
In this program, students will have an option later to earn college credit for the courses. The curriculum’s goal is to build a 32-credit program equivalent to a minor in an academic study.
