Phoenix typically isn’t identified with submarines for some pretty obvious reasons. It is nowhere near a body of water that would give a sub the opportunity to reach deep below the surface. But there is a strong retired military presence in Arizona and an interest among many in military history.
Those are at least a couple of the reasons that the Arizona Silent Service Memorial — a tribute to submarine veterans who have died in the line of duty — is in Phoenix.
The Show spoke with Marcus Hensley, the co-chair of the memorial effort, who has also served on submarines.
