MEXICO CITY — While the Black Lives Matter social movement has gained controversial notoriety this year in the U.S., a similar situation has happened with the feminist protests in Mexico. And the government from that country and its capital city are now accusing the protesters of violence and sedition.
During this week's abortion rights protest in Mexico City, the police gassed and surrounded the rally to stop them from reaching the city's main square.
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said protesters wounded two police officers and threatened to throw Molotov bombs.
Sheinbaum said protesters should follow the example of peaceful rallies in other cities of the world.
She and Mexico's president, both from the same party (Morena), accuse their opponents of financing the feminist movement. Sheinmbaum even made public the names of businesswomen allegedly funding it.
But feminists argue that the government is evading its responsibility of stopping femicides and violence against women, while provoking lynchings by publishing names.
