Recent research from an University of Arizona graduate shows four of Jupiter’s moons that have water or magma oceans under their surfaces are heating each other through tidal waves.
Hamish Hay conducted the study and told PBS’s “Arizona Horizon” the moon’s tides could be stronger than the planet they orbit, “because these moons have oceans beneath their surface, one moon raising tides on another in some specific circumstances can be more powerful than Jupiter’s tides.”
Hay also indicated those warm oceans could have implications for life outside Earth.
The research was published this summer while Hay was finishing his doctorate.
