Last week, an Arizona family was carjacked on a highway in neighboring Sonora, Mexico. Local police have recovered the family’s truck and are working to return the vehicle to the United States.
Four members of the Davis family of Mesa were robbed at gunpoint while traveling to a vacation home in Puerto Lobos, Sonora.
While the family was driving on the highway south of the tourist town Puerto Peñasco last Tuesday night, two armed men in a gray sedan ordered them out of their 2017 Toyota Tundra. One of the gunmen drove away with the truck, which was pulling a trailer with three ATVS, leaving the family on the side of the road.
Now, authorities say they have recovered the truck and are trying to get it back to the victims.
"We're in contact with the U.S. insurance company to complete the necessary procedures to allow the owners to get their vehicle back," said Lupita Orduño, a spokesperson with the state Attorney’s Office.
She said an investigation into the carjacking is still ongoing and authorities are looking for those responsible for the robbery.
The members of the family posted statements on social media thanking Sonoran law enforcement and saying they plan to continue traveling to Mexico.
