On Oct. 26, Valley Metro will implement service changes in the East Valley along with long-term detours in downtown Phoenix as a result of redeveloping the Central Station transit center.
The Central Station transit center at Central Avenue and Van Buren will close Oct. 26 as construction begins. The redevelopment project is expected to take three years.
Valley Metro spokesperson Brittany Hoffman says fewer cars have been in the downtown area as a result of the pandemic, which will help ease the transition with these service changes and detours.
“We did a lot of intensive studying on our new routing and new bus stop locations for downtown Phoenix to help with the ingress and egress of people coming in and out of downtown, especially during those peak periods in the morning, and in the afternoon," Hoffman said.
Hoffman also said Central Station may be able to reopen early as the project is partially finished, and the South Central extension is expected to open in 2024.
