On Friday, Phoenix broke a record it set only two days ago, recording its 145th day with triple-digit temperatures this year.
Phoenix set its former record in 1989, but the rest of the city's top-five triple-digit years happened after 2000.
As ASU climate expert Randy Cerveny told KJZZ's "The Show," this year's heat was exacerbated by weak Pacific hurricane and monsoon seasons.
"We just had an incredibly hot summer with unfortunately very little relief. Normally in the summer, we'll get those monsoon thunderstorms to cool us down occasionally. And we just didn't even have those," Cerveny said.
And this year isn't over yet. The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 99 on Saturday and temperatures in the high-90s next week.
