The state Department of Health Services has reversed its ban on games and activities in bars. What remains off limits is dancing — but karaoke, pool, darts, bowling, and even axe-throwing is back on.
DHS did not give an immediate reason for the change. But DHS and Gov. Doug Ducey are currently being sued by more than 100 bar owners for discriminatory treatment. The attorney for the owners, Ilan Wurman, says this reversal is a big deal.
“I have clients who offer league nights on both pool and darts. And when they couldn't offer pool and darts, no one was showing up, you know, to have a drink. I mean, the pool and the darts don't pay a lot of money. But it's the draw. It draws people there," Wurman said.
These particular activities do come with stipulations including sanitizing equipment between customers, or having customers bring their own equipment. Masks are required at all times, even when singing karaoke. Some activities will have participant limits, and social distancing will be enforced.
