California’s loss is turning into Yuma’s gain, at least when it comes to youth sports.
Teams from Arizona’s western neighbor are coming across state lines to play in tournaments due to COVID-related restrictions at home.
Under guidance from the California Department of Public Health, youth sports and physical education can only happen when participants are part of a “stable cohort,” like a class, to reduce the risk of transmission, and when they can stay at least 6 feet apart.
For sports in which that’s not possible, players and teams are only allowed to train and do physical conditioning — and those activities still require distancing.
Games and tournaments are also not allowed in California. So, many teams are coming to play in Yuma, instead.
The Show spoke with Kimberly Kahl, executive director of the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce, about what kind of activity the area has seen in terms of teams coming from California to play in Yuma.
