A little less than a year after completing the South Mountain Freeway, the Arizona Department of Transportation finished a pedestrian and bicycle path serving the Ahwatukee community.
On Friday, the shared multi-use path along the former Pecos Road alignment in Ahwatukee opened, allowing bikes and pedestrians to safely travel alongside the freeway, from about 40th Street to 17th Avenue, with relatively few intersections.
Pecos Road had originally been a popular bike thoroughfare before the freeway was constructed, attracting thousands of cyclists each year.
The city of Phoenix is responsible for maintaining the path.
