Another Reporter Killed In Southern Sonora

Another reporter has been killed in Sonora, one of several so far this year in one of the Mexican state’s largest cities.

Jesús Alfonso Piñuelas was killed in gunfire Monday evening in a neighborhood of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora’s second-largest city, according to the State Attorney’s Office. His death marks the third murder of a reporter in the municipality of Cajeme this year.

“It’s important that authorities did not dismiss his journalism work from the beginning, and that it’s being considered as a line of investigation,” said independent reporter Reyna Ramirez, a founder of the Sonoran Journalists’ Network.

That possibility had been quickly discarded in previous cases, according to Ramirez.

In addition to doing work for several outlets, Piñuelas had also recently started doing food deliveries, which Ramirez said highlights the economic precarity faced by many Mexican reporters
