Most U.S. senators will begin their new term in January, when the next session of Congress begins. Senator-elect Mark Kelly will get a head start.
Kelly, a Democrat, can be sworn in as early as November 30, the date election results in Arizona are scheduled to be certified.
Republican Sen. Martha McSally, who conceded to Kelly late last week, was temporarily filling the seat left vacant by the late U.S. Senator John McCain. Kelly defeated McSally in a special election that determined who would serve the remaining two years of McCain’s six-year term in the Senate. That means Kelly will have to run for re-election in 2022.
